About Water Tech Innovation: Discovering your path to impact

The field of water is broad and deep, involving sectors and technologies from purification and wastewater to agriculture, watershed management, hydropower, sensors, data management, and other software solutions. For researchers and innovators, navigating this complex landscape and turning a breakthrough idea into a market-ready solution can be challenging. How do you identify where your innovation fits? What steps are needed to transform your concept into a viable product or startup?

This two-part workshop, starting with an industry landscape session, establishes a broad, baseline review of the water technology industry, including emerging issues, challenges and 'pain points to be solved.' The second session is rooted in the Lean Launchpad methodology, and focuses on the critical process of discovery interviews. These interviews—conducted with potential customers, partners, and stakeholders—help you assess “problem-solution fit.” In other words, do you have evidence that your solution addresses a real customer pain point and delivers tangible value?

Designed for academic researchers and industry innovators in the early stages of their entrepreneurial journey, these interactive session will cover the following:

Session One:

  • Keynote from water industry leaders (e.g., Dr. Barry Liner)
  • Panel discussion with startup founders navigating water innovation
  • Live Q&A

Session Two:

  • Interactive workshop on customer discovery interviews
  • Breakout sessions for peer learning and practice
  • Networking with mentors and fellow innovators

Whether you’re exploring the commercial potential of your research or seeking to scale your innovation, this workshop will equip you with tools, knowledge, and connections to take meaningful steps forward.

This two-part workshop is offered jointly by The Water Council, Discovery to Product (D2P) and the Lubar Center for Entrepreneurship. Recordings from both sessions will be available. There is NO cost to participate.
